How to Report an Animal Issue in Oxford County

If something is happening now such as an animal at large, an attack, an injured animal, or a situation that poses an immediate safety risk, you must call Oxford County Dispatch at 207-743-9554 option 0.

Calling dispatch creates the official record and allows Animal Control or law enforcement to respond. Email and social media are not appropriate for emergencies.


Dog Licensing

All dogs over 6 months of age must be licensed in the town where they are kept. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required, and licenses are renewed each year.

Rabies Vaccination

Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and kept current according to Maine law.

Dogs at Large in Oxford County

It is unlawful for a dog to be off the owner’s property and not under control, except when legally hunting. If a dog is running loose, call dispatch.

Animal Bites and Aggressive Behavior

Any bite to a person or another animal must be reported immediately. Maine law requires quarantine and investigation. Dangerous dog determinations are made by the court.

Animal Cruelty, Neglect, Shelter, Food, and Water

Maine law requires animals to be provided with necessary food, water, medical care, proper shelter, and protection from the weather. Abuse and neglect are crimes.

Animals Left in Vehicles

Leaving an animal in a vehicle under dangerous conditions is addressed in state law. If an animal appears to be in distress, call dispatch immediately.

Livestock and Farm Animals in Oxford County

Livestock must be provided with adequate food, water, shelter, and protection from the elements. Zoning rules may also apply depending on the town.
