Neighbor Check Collar for Outdoor Felines
Most “stray” felines people find in rural Maine actually belong to someone nearby. They just have a much bigger neighborhood than people realize.
A friendly feline showing up on a porch, in a barn, or around a feeding station is not always stray. Many outdoor pets travel between several homes along the same road, especially in rural areas.
To help with that, I created a simple Neighbor Check Collar residents can use before assuming a visiting feline has no home. The idea was inspired by the Community Cats Podcast paper collar concept, which helped encourage this local version.
How it works
- Download and print the template
- Cut out one collar strip
- Write your name and phone number on it
- Tape it loosely around the feline’s neck
If the animal has a caretaker nearby, the collar will often be removed and the person may contact you. It is a simple way to help neighbors connect before a roaming outdoor pet is mistakenly removed from its home area.
Important: Only use this with a friendly animal you can safely handle. The collar should be loose enough to fit two fingers underneath so it can break away easily if needed.
